1972 Gibson EB-OL Soundclips

Gibson bass guitars | EB-0 bass main page | 1972 EB-0L | Soundclips

Audio samples of a 1972 Gibson EB-OL electric bass guitar through a 1964 Ampeg B15.

The EB0 changed considerably in 1972, though the less fanatical might not see a big difference; the SG styling remained, but several subtle upgrades moved it's voice away from the rich, dark, some-would-say muddy tones of the 1960s to a (slightly!) more articulate place ready for a new decade. Longer scale (34 1/2") EBs had been produced since very late 1969, and when combined with a new neck wood (maple rather than mahogany) and pickup relocation (away from the neck, towards the bridge), increased clarity was possible. This (rare) example also has an alder body, to create about as bright a tone as is possible from a mudbucker equipped EB - I only use flat wound bass strings, and generally play with my fingers, but put some round wound strings on, and find a pick, and this bass can be brighter than any other EB0 - but that's not saying a great deal - it was never going to get the clank and zing that the mid seventies bass players required, hence it's quick demise at the hands of the new Ripper, Grabber and G3 basses.
