The Gibson SB400 bass and Gibson SG200 guitar were launched in 1971. Both were entry level instruments with relatively short production runs; 939 SB400s were shipped between the years 1971 and 1973, see SB bass shipping figures.
This publicity sheet was sent to Gibson dealers in February 1971, along with a covering letter:
This exciting new addition to the Gibson line of quality basses offers the sounds of today! Designed to meet the demands of today's music, the SB-300 with 30 1/2" scale or SB-400 with a long 34 1/2" scale truly offers the "punch" required to support a group! Deep, rich bass tonalities! Clean, clear highs! Available at the touch of a finger!
